Water.org has developed a Learning Strategy to continue to strengthen its position as the thought and practice leader in promoting innovative financial inclusion to enable improved access to water and sanitation to millions of people at the base of the economic pyramid in less-developed countries. Our organization seeks a highly motivated individual who will lead the development and execution of strategy, cultivate a small, dedicated Learning team, and generate insight that will advance our approaches, motivate other practitioners to adopt WaterCredit principles and practices, and advocate for other types of leading institutions to take and scale up WASH finance solutions.

This position will report to the Director of International Programs, who will be based in Denver, CO. The position will work from either our headquarters office in Kansas City, MO or our satellite office in San Francisco, CA. S/he will work closely with members of the International Programs team located in the U.S. and in six regional offices around the globe. This person will also collaborate with the Director of Strategic Initiatives, based in San Francisco. As a senior member of the team, this individual will be expected to represent Water.org to a variety of external audiences including our partners, practitioners in countries inside and outside of our operational areas, strategic donors and other collaborating institutions. Travel to areas where Water.org operates will be expected periodically.


  • Lead overall development, execution, monitoring and performance of Water.org’s learning strategy, platforms and content
  • Lead Water.org’s efforts to educate, motivate, and ultimately have practitioners in less- developed countries adopt WaterCredit principles and practices which will translate into reaching more people with water and sanitation improvements over time
  • Generate ideas, evidence, and insight that will support Water.org’s global advocacy efforts, in partnership with the Director of Strategic Initiatives and in conjunction with the wider International Programs team
  • Serve as a leading convener of and spokesperson at meetings, venues, conferences, and virtual gathering places for the organization and its practices
  • Oversee the creation and dissemination of learning materials, platforms, and avenues for knowledge exchange in conjunction with the Learning team and the wider International Programs team
  • Lead marketing of new learning materials and information through Water.org’s existing channels with a goal of identifying and expanding into new channels and external networks
  • Supervise the development of learning mechanisms within Water.org and across our partner network to gather, synthesize, learn, and share information, experience, and insights that will improve our practices and magnify our impact
  • Recruit, train, cultivate and lead a small Learning team within International Programs


  • At least fifteen years of overall work experience relevant to the organization
  • At least ten years of direct experience in knowledge management, learning generation, practiceadoption and advocacy strategies
  • Experience working with international donors and with local partners and collaborators in LatinAmerica, sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia required
  • Experience as or with practitioners in the water/sanitation and microfinance sectors in less developed countries required
  • Project and human resource management experience in supervisory roles necessary
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree required
  • Knowledge of and conversational ability in foreign languages preferred
  • Must be willing to travel up to 25%
  • US citizenship or a current H1-B work visa required
